Put it into practice: Skill development & Ball control 2

8th March 2021

We have Lee Drew back with us this week, for part 2 of his excellent series looking at skill development and ball control. If you haven’t seen it already, you can check out part 1 of the playlist.

Lee brings with him a wealth of experience as an elite coach, professional referee consultant, and PSA TV co-commentator. He also comes from an elite playing background, establishing himself in the top 50 of the PSA world rankings during his professional career. This deep knowledge of the game from both a practical and theoretical perspective, means his playlists are always some of the most popular we have on the site.

The second part of this playlist continues Lee’s examination of the importance of your racket skills, and how the ability to better control the ball gives you significant advantages in your play. Lee also discusses what constitutes a skilful player, and how that skill allows more command of where you’re able to put the ball, and how that then leads to more create and convert opportunities.

The playlist contains a number of different drill suggestions both solo and with a partner, and presents a series of fun, innovative routines and games that allow you to really zoom in on your necessary areas for additional work. Whatever level you’re at, from beginner to advanced, the playlist will provide you with suitable developmental opportunities.

The playlist videos all build on from part 1, to really go into detail to discuss exactly how you can transfer these fundamental skills into your own game. These insights from Lee, along with the drills and tests contained, will put you into a position to best practice your ball control and assess your ongoing improvements as you move forwards.

The main aim of this blog is to give you more comprehensive ideas of exercises you can use to start exploring the key fundamentals of this area and help you effectively develop the kinds of skills you can use to best effect in your matches. With both Lee’s expert guidance and the elite professional demos provided, this playlist gives plenty of great learning opportunities in an area that is fundamental to your success on court.

We’ve put together a selection of both solo and pairs sessions for you to try, built around the main technical points that Lee discusses in his tuition. Watch through the videos from the playlist and then click through the links to the sessions below to check them out, and discover how better racket skills and ball control can really boost your shot options on-court and add an extra dimension to your game.
